Dr. Pickelman

Dr. John Pickelman is chancellor emeritus of the North Harris Montgomery Community College District (NHMCCD), a position he held from March 1, 1991 to August 31, 2007.  NHMCCD, a public community college district in the greater North Houston, Texas area, serves a geographical area of 1400 square miles with a resident population in excess of one million. Dr. Pickelman also serves as adjunct professor, Community College Leadership Program, The University of Texas at Austin and is the current Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Texas Association of Community Colleges and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Dr. Pickelman came to NHMCCD from Galveston College, where he had served as president since 1983.  Prior service includes several administrative positions with the Dallas County Community College District:  special assistant to the chancellor, vice president for student services and vice president of instruction at the District’s Brookhaven College.  Before his employment with Dallas, he held administrative and teaching posts at two private liberal arts colleges, Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas and William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.

Dr. Pickelman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Albion College, Albion, Michigan, a Master of Arts degree in Education (Counseling) from the University of Missouri at Kansas City and the Doctor of Philosophy degree (Educational Administration) from The University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Pickelman was born October 29, 1945 in Saginaw, Michigan.  He is married to Barbara Wierseman Pickelman, currently Director of Organizational and Leadership Development at Service Corporation International in Houston.  He has two sons, Jason and Matthew. Among Dr. Pickelman’s personal interests are gourmet cooking, golf, boating and fishing, but his greatest interest is grand parenting for his grandchildren Ryan, Grace, Case and Elle.
