Roy B. Shilling Jr. is President Emeritus of Southwestern University. During his nineteen year tenure as President of Southwestern University, Dr. Shilling was selected as one of the 100 most effective American college presidents. Dr. Shilling served as President of Hendrix College for twelve years prior to his election as President of Southwestern. He, also, held administrative positions at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio, Ball State University, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and McMurry University.
Dr. Shilling has been a member of the Board of Directors for the American Council on Education and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. In addition, he served on the Division III President’s Council of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and the Board of Visitors for Air University, United States Air Force. He formerly served as President of the University Senate of The United Methodist Church, and as President and Vice President of the National Association of Schools and Colleges of the United Methodist Church. He has chaired the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee for Arkansas and Texas, and served as President and Vice President for The Southern University Conference.
Dr. Shilling’s public service has included membership on the Austin Area Research Organization, and the Board of Directors for both the Republican Bank-Austin and Commercial National Bank, Little Rock. He has served as the member of the Board of Directors of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, and is a member of the Philosophical Society of Texas.
Dr. Shilling earned a bachelor of arts degree from McMurry University. He received a bachelor of divinity degree from Southern Methodist University and a master’s degree from Indiana University. His Ph.D. was also granted by Indiana University.
